Interview with Kristen, owner of Kristen June

Every week, we spotlight a small business. This week, we are spotlighting Kristen June, and its founder, Kristen! We gave Kristen a series of questions:

1. Tell us a little about you as a person (background, education, hobbies, etc.)

2. What is the mission and vision you have for your business?

3. Tell us a little about your experience being a small business owner.

4. How has COVID-19 impacted your business?

5. Are there any products you would like to specifically mention?

These were her responses:

1. I have a B.A. in Media and Communications from Redeemer University. I have a passion for all things creative--this includes sewing, writing, and everything in between. When I'm not creating, I'm most likely taking care of my plants, or thrifting.

2. Kristen June started as a scrunchie business, it has evolved into a business that is all about creating while maintaining sustainability. In my shop, you'll primarily find scrunchies, headbands, and bandanas, though I do also like to add in things like embroidered socks, pouches, t-shirts, and whatever else I've been working on.

3. I started my business in August 2019, though I didn't know it at the time. I posted a few scrunchies on my personal Instagram account and people wanted to buy them. Since then I've made over 2000 sales and have over 5000 amazing followers on Instagram. I am an advocate for authenticity, and not being timid of making bad art. I want to empower people all over the world to step out and chase their dreams. In the past 365 days, I have quit my full time corporate job, assisted my husband in converting a van into a home, moved into the van, travelled across Canada, sold the van, grown my business, and now we are looking for a new home! It's been a wild year, and it's been full of taking big leaps of faith. I want people to find joy and excitement in the unknown.

4. COVID-19 pushed a movement towards "supporting small" and this really allowed my business to boom. COVID-19 also opened my eyes to what I really wanted, and it was to be my own boss full time.

5. My scrunchies are definitely my "most common item" though I think my embroidered socks and pouches are my personal favourite!

Kristen’s scrunchies are so cute yet durable; you can tell that the fabric and elastics used to make them can last a while. There are so many options to choose from her scrunchie collection - some have different patterns, colours and fabrics. It’s amazing that she’s doing her best to reduce her carbon footprint by repurposing textiles! We also love her embroidered socks - they add the perfect touch to any outfit, and the embroidery looks simple yet stunning! Definitely check out her store, as she has awesome headbands, pouches, and much more! Looking forward to seeing her future items!

Interview with Sophia, owner of Vine and Vessel Apparel

Every week, we spotlight a small business. This week, we are spotlighting Vine and Vessel Apparel, and its founder, Sophia! We gave Sophia a series of questions:

1. I'm a graphic designer and have been in the industry for about 7 years. Also, I do pottery, photography, and I paint!

2. Showcasing the Fruit of the Spirit with a new collection for each fruit. Original faith-based designs. 100% sweatshop free! Really hoping and praying that Vessel and Vine Apparel can be a place where God is glorified. That it can bring conversation into people's lives where it would be otherwise hard to speak about Christ.

3. I love being able to work for myself. Just being able to make my own decisions when it comes to how I want this brand to be. It definitely has its challenges but so far it's been 100% worth it!

4. Started my business within the Covid-19 pandemic and so far it's been a great response, all things considered. Thankful to all who have helped get this far but as this is a new business, V&V still very much needs your prayers and support!

5. The Peace collection was just released! Check it out at vesselandvineapparel.com!

Sophia’s apparel designs are so creative and lovely! We love how she uses her business as an opportunity to speak about Christ, and she creates unique faith-based designs! We find it amazing that Sophia is also giving back to the community- her family initiated The Super Sophia Project, which is an organization that supports kids and families battling cancer, and a portion of her business goes to this Project. She currently has three collections related to the Fruit of the Spirit, and her Peace collection recently released, so check out her website to see the awesome apparel! We’re looking forward to her future designs!
